What is a garter lingerie set?

A garter lingerie set is lingerie with garter straps attached, usually a bra, panty and garter belt sold together, so the straps can clip to thigh high stockings.

The order matters: garter belt first, then stockings, then panties on top. That way the panties come off without unclipping anything. Most people only put them on the other way around once.

Garters are not only decorative. With plain-top stockings the straps are what keep them up, so metal clips and adjustable straps are worth checking for.

Types of garter lingerie

Garter lingerie by shape:

  • Bra and panty sets: three piece sets with a matching garter belt. The whole look in one purchase.
  • Teddies: garter teddies with the straps built into the one piece.
  • Garter belts: garter belts sold on their own, to add to a set you already own.
  • Stockings: thigh highs to clip in. A plain welt (the band at the top) gives the clips something to grip.
  • Plus size lingerie: many garter styles run into plus sizes.

How to choose the right one

If you've never worn garters: start with a three piece set. The belt, panty and bra are sized to work together.

If you want them to hold: pair them with plain-top stockings. Plain tops need the garters to stay up. Stay-ups with silicone bands work with or without them.

If you're between sizes: size the garter belt to your waist, not your hips. It sits at or just above the natural waist.

If it's for photos: adjust the straps so they pull straight. Slack or twisted straps are the first thing a camera picks up.

If comfort matters: go for wider, adjustable straps. Thin fixed straps dig in when you sit.
