A hybrid lubricant is a water based lube with a small percentage of silicone mixed into it. The water carries the silicone, so you get a creamier, longer lasting glide than water alone without the residue and the scrubbing that pure silicone brings.
It is the middle option, and middle options come with a caveat. Toy safety depends on how much silicone is in the blend, and manufacturers are not consistent about telling you. A low-silicone hybrid is usually fine with silicone toys. A high-silicone one is not. Read the label, or ask us and we will check the formula for you.
The practical difference you will notice: hybrids feel thicker and slightly cloudy next to the clear slipperiness of water based lube, and they typically last two to three times as long before you reapply.
A hybrid only makes sense next to the two formulas it sits between.
If you only want to own one bottle: this is the one. A hybrid covers most situations without being the best at any single one of them, which is exactly the point.
If you have silicone toys: check the label before you buy. Low-silicone hybrids are generally fine. If the bottle will not tell you, treat it as silicone and use water based with those toys instead.
If water based dries out on you too fast: a hybrid is the smallest upgrade that fixes it. You get real staying power without committing to silicone cleanup.
If you're sensitive: look for glycerin-free. A hybrid is still mostly water, so it can carry the same sweeteners and preservatives as any water based formula.
