A weed grinder is a small case with teeth inside. You put flower in, twist, and it comes out at an even consistency instead of the uneven clumps you get pulling it apart by hand.
Even grind is the whole reason to own one. Pieces of the same size burn at the same rate, so a bowl does not tunnel down one side and a joint does not run. It also keeps the resin on the grinder instead of on your fingers.
The number that matters is the stage count. A two-stage grinder is a lid and a chamber. A four-stage adds a mesh screen and a bottom compartment that collects kief, the loose trichomes that fall off while you grind. That bottom chamber is the entire reason to spend more than ten dollars, and it fills faster than most people expect.
Grinders sort by how many chambers they have and what the teeth are made of:
The pipes a grinder feeds are in glass pipes and bowls, the storage is in stash jars and bags, and rolling papers is the consumable. Trays, tools and everything else head shop side sits in smoking accessories and the 420 shop. If you came here looking for the other kind of grinder, bump and grinders is that page.
If you are only buying one: four-stage. The kief chamber is the difference between a grinder and a box with teeth, and a two-stage will never give that back.
If it lives in a pocket or a bag: go smaller and accept the trade. Less capacity, more emptying, and it will clog before a 63mm does. Still better than grinding by hand at a festival.
On material: metal teeth, not acrylic. Aluminum teeth cut. Molded plastic teeth round off, and a rounded tooth tears flower rather than grinding it.
On the teeth: diamond-shaped and plenty of them. Tooth count and shape do more for grind quality than anything printed on the box.
On cleaning: freeze it first, then brush it out. Cold resin goes brittle and flakes off. Warm resin smears and stays put.
If it is a gift: a grinder is the safest thing on this shelf. It gets used every single time, and almost nobody buys themselves a good one.
