If you are the one in control: start with a collar and one impact toy. A flogger spreads the hit across a wide area. A crop lands a small, precise sting exactly where you aim. Stick to fleshy areas like the thighs and bottom.
If you are new to restraints: go for cuffs with quick release or bondage tape. Both come off fast. Never tie anything around the neck, check hands and feet for numbness or cold, and keep safety shears within reach.
If you want to try wax play: use body candles only and test first. Drip on your inner arm before anyone else, and drip from higher up to cool the wax more before it lands. The wax play guide walks through a first session.
If you want electro play: start with a kit. It comes with what you need to begin. Keep it away from the head and from anything flammable, and skip it entirely with a pacemaker or other implanted device.
If you want the look more than the gear: wet look, fishnet and harnesses. A harness teddy, wet look thigh highs and a studded collar read as dark kink with nothing to learn.
If it is a gift: a bondage kit or a bondage bear. A kit gives them a full first scene in one box. A bear says it with a wink.
On toys and lube: water based with silicone. Silicone lube breaks down silicone toys. Every restraint and impact toy should be wiped down with a toy cleaner after use.
