First impressions

I found the Fin on a Kickstarter campaign a few months before it shipped, and I backed it partly on principle. Two women were building sex toys for women at a point when almost nobody was doing that, and they were a small business the way we are a small business. Any time a genuinely good product comes out of a company that size, I want to try it early.

Then it arrived and the principle stopped being the point. It is tiny. That was the first surprise. The second was how well it stays put once it is between your fingers, which is the entire engineering problem a finger vibe has to solve and the reason most of them fail. The packaging is lovely too, which matters more than people admit when something is going to sit in a bedside drawer.

The test

Partner play

This is where it earns its place. Most vibrators take over. You put one down between you and it becomes the thing that is happening. The Fin does the opposite: it stays out of the way and adds vibration to what your hands were already doing, so nothing about the contact changes. No handle, no angle to hold, no object between two people. If your partner likes using their hands and has been resistant to bringing a toy in, this is the one to hand them.

Solo

Worth being straight about the power: this is a softer vibration than most things we sell, and that is a design choice rather than a shortcoming. If you already know you need something strong, you will find the Fin polite. If bigger vibrators have always been too much, or you want something to warm up with, the softness is exactly the appeal. Because the vibration comes through your own fingers you feel precisely how much pressure you are applying, which you genuinely do not with a wand. You trade raw intensity for control.

It is also the quietest thing in my drawer. If you live with roommates or thin walls, that alone might decide it.

Where it lands

Nine years on I still point people toward the Fin more often than almost anything else we carry, and it is one of the few toys I suggest without asking three questions first. It is not the most powerful thing we sell and it was never trying to be. It is the one that makes a couple feel like a couple who happen to be using a vibrator, rather than two people operating a device.
