Stockings

Stockings and tights are the finishing layer. Thigh highs with silicone stay-up bands, lace top and garter styles, wet look and fishnet, fence net, rhinestone tights and holiday prints, worn with a garter belt or on their own.

What is a pair of stockings?

A thigh high stocking is a single leg that ends partway up the thigh, with nothing joining it to the other one. That is the entire difference between stockings and tights. Tights and pantyhose are one piece from the waist down, so the fit gets decided at the hip and there is fabric across the middle. Stockings leave the middle alone, which is why they are the ones that get worn with lingerie.

How a stocking stays up is the thing to check before you buy, and it is the thing photographs will not tell you. Some have a silicone band inside the lace top that grips skin and holds on its own. Others have no grip at all and are built to clip to a garter belt, which is a separate purchase. The two look nearly identical on a model and behave nothing alike on you. Styles sold with attached garters or a built-in suspender settle the question for you.

Two numbers decide what you actually get. Denier is the thickness of the yarn: under 20 is properly sheer, 40 to 60 reads opaque, and the higher the number the more it covers and the longer it survives. And on thigh highs, band width is what keeps them up. A narrow strip of silicone slides down by the second hour on a fuller thigh, a wide band does not, and that is not something going up a size will fix.

Types of stockings

Grouped by how they stay up and what they are made of, with the rest of each one next door.

  • Stay-up thigh highs: silicone gripping the skin inside the lace top, so nothing else is needed. The ones to buy if you do not want a second purchase.
  • Garter and suspender styles: built to clip to a belt, or sold with the straps already attached. More visible hardware and more to look at.
  • Fishnet and fence net: open weave, from fine diamond mesh to wide fence net. The most durable thing in hosiery and the hardest to actually ruin.
  • Wet look and vinyl: opaque, shiny and structured, with zips and lace-up panels on some. The hardest edge of the category.
  • Rhinestone and patterned tights: set stones, back seams and printed patterns, worn as the statement rather than as a layer under something.
  • Holiday and novelty prints: seasonal designs meant to be seen and photographed. Bought late and worn once a year, which is the whole point of them.
  • Garter belts: what the non-grip styles clip to, and the piece most people discover they need after buying the stockings.
  • Socks: knee highs, thigh highs and novelty pairs in a knit rather than a sheer.
  • All legwear: stockings and socks together, if you are shopping the leg rather than the style.
  • Bodystockings: the same knit running all the way up instead of stopping at the thigh.
  • Teddies: what most of these get photographed with, and what they were cut to go under.
  • Plus size lingerie: extended sizing, on its own page so the fits are easier to find.
  • All lingerie: the full range, for whatever goes above the thigh.

How to choose the right one

If you do not want to buy a garter belt too: stay-up bands or attached garters. A silicone lined top holds on its own and an attached suspender comes with its own straps. Anything else in the category needs a belt you do not have yet.

On sheerness: check the denier before the color. Under 20 is see-through, 40 to 60 is opaque, and the number tells you more about how a pair will look on than a photograph does.

If they slide down on you: wider band, not bigger size. A narrow silicone strip fails on a fuller thigh no matter what size you order. Width of the grip is the fix, and it is visible in the product photos.

If you want them to last more than a night: fishnet or fence net. Open weave takes rough handling, heels and fingernails. Fine sheer is beautiful and will forgive you exactly once.

If the legs are the outfit: rhinestone or patterned. Set stones and prints read from across a room, where a plain sheer reads as skin. That is the right call on camera and an overstatement in daylight.

On care: hand wash cool and dry them flat. A machine will catch a toe in the drum and that is the end of the pair. See all legwear for the rest of the range.
