Why She's Not Initiating (It's Not About Sex)

A man asked the internet why women never initiate. Thousands of women answered him, clearly and patiently, in his own comment section. Then the men turned up to tell them they were wrong.

Bold editorial collage cover for an article about why she is not initiating sex

Let me answer it before anything else, because the answer is not complicated and it has been given out loud, for free, thousands of times. She has not stopped wanting sex. She has stopped having anything left at the end of the day, and a large part of what used up the day was managing a household that she is managing alone, including managing you. You cannot be someone's project manager from seven in the morning until ten at night and then want them at ten fifteen. That is the whole thing.

The second half of the answer is the one men tend to like less. The fix is not a conversation, a compliment, or a better technique. It is doing your half of the invisible work without being asked, permanently, with no expectation attached. Not as a trade. That distinction is the entire post, and it is where most men fall down.

I stitched a video about this recently. The man who made it is not, I think, asking in good faith, and I will get to that. But the question underneath it is one I get asked constantly by men who mean it sincerely, so it is worth answering properly.

Foreplay is NOT grabbing my boob. Try picking up a broom. One comment on his video. 2,845 likes.

The guy at Buffalo Wild Wings

A while back I was at Buffalo Wild Wings and got talking to a man who found out what I do for a living. He got straight to it, the way people often do once they know. How, he wanted to know, could he get his wife to give him blow jobs again.

I told him to do the dishes.

He laughed, because he thought I was being funny. I was not. It is the most practical answer I have, and I have given it to a lot of men since. Every single one of them wanted a different answer, ideally one involving a product I could sell him.

Here is why the dishes. Whatever is happening in that marriage, the thing standing between him and what he wants is almost never technique and almost never her body. It is that she is tired in a way that sleep does not fix, and a good chunk of that tiredness has his name on it. No toy solves that. No conversation about spicing things up solves it. Emptying the dishwasher without being asked, every day, for two months, gets closer than anything on my site does.

Five thousand women answered him

The video I stitched has over five thousand comments, and the striking thing is how consistent they are. This was not a spread of opinions. It was the same answer arriving over and over from women who do not know each other, phrased slightly differently each time.

3,664 likes The question back "How many times does he initiate doing housework without being asked?" The single most liked reply on the video, and the whole argument in one line.
2,821 likes The order of operations "Men need sex to connect. Women need to connect to have sex." Not universal, but common enough that thousands of women recognised themselves in it instantly.
The mothering problem Not your mother "I'm not in the mood when I feel like I have to mother you and do absolutely everything. When I have to repeat myself time and time again about all the things around the house."
356 likes The touch audit "How many men actually touch their wives except when they want sex?" If every hand on her is an opening bid, she will start flinching from all of it.

And underneath nearly all of it, the plainest one of the lot, from a woman who did not elaborate because she did not need to: because we are exhausted.

I want you to want to

The lemons scene

There is a fight in the film The Break-Up that women quote to each other constantly, and I have never once heard a man bring it up. She has cooked for his family all evening. He is on the sofa. She asks him to help with the dishes and he says he will do them, later, and then delivers the line that he thinks wins the argument: he does not want to do the dishes.

And she says the thing. I want you to want to do the dishes.

He finds this insane. Of course nobody wants to do dishes. But she is not asking him to enjoy scrubbing a pan. She is asking him to want the house to run, to want her not to be drowning, to want to be a person who notices. She is asking him to care about the same things she cares about instead of treating her priorities as chores she can assign him.

That is the difference between help and partnership, and every woman reading this already knows which one she has.

Why "just tell him and he'd do it" is the wrong answer

The man who made the video did reply to that top comment, and his reply is more useful than the video was. He said that if she told him it would work as a turn on, he would do it all the time.

Read that again, because it is the entire problem wearing a helpful face. It says: I will do half the household labour if it is priced correctly. It keeps the work as a favour to her rather than a shared responsibility, and it keeps sex as the payment. One comment on his video described it exactly right, that sex for men is typically a simple transaction. And a transaction is precisely what women can smell from three rooms away.

If you do the dishes to get laid, you have not done the dishes. You have made an offer. She will know, because the resentment shows up the first week she is tired and nothing happens, and suddenly the dishes stop getting done.

This comment section is full of women answering your question honestly. You asked, they answered. And men are telling them they are wrong. That should tell you everything you need to know. A comment on the original video

That is the part I cannot get past. A comment with over sixteen hundred likes made the same observation, that women were all over the comments giving the reasons and men were arguing with them. Another put it more bluntly: the women in these comments are saying exactly what men need to do, and still men will not do it.

He asked a question. He received the answer, several thousand times, from the group best qualified to give it. Then he and a great many men in his comments explained to those women that the answer was wrong. If you want to know why she is not initiating, that reflex is a decent place to start looking.

Unimpressed reaction

Mother, child, or man

One comment on my stitch has stayed with me, and it is the most elegant summary of this I have seen anywhere.

If a guy brings out my inner child, he's a man (chefs kiss). If a guy brings out my inner mother, he's a little boy. If a guy brings out my inner man, he's a 🐈 A comment on my stitch

That last one is a cat emoji, and everybody reading it knew exactly what word she meant. Pussy. It is blunt and it is a little bit mean and it is also the most accurate thing in the whole comment section, because it names the third possibility that nobody talks about. It is not only that he makes her his mother. It is that when a man will not lead anything, will not decide anything, will not carry anything, she has to become the man in the house as well, and there is nothing left in her that wants him.

No woman likes the men who live in boy land instead of man land. Another woman put it as a plea rather than a critique: let me be feminine.

Whatever language you use for it, and plenty of women use the language of masculine and feminine energy here, the underlying mechanic is the same and it is not mystical. Desire needs some polarity, some sense of leaning into someone rather than holding them up. A woman who spends all day being the responsible one, the one who remembers, the one who delegates and follows up and carries the plan, is running on the exact energy that makes her least able to soften at night. She is not choosing that. It is the only role available when nobody else takes it.

Take the load off her and she gets access to a part of herself that has been unavailable for years. That is not a reward you have earned. It is just what happens when someone finally gets to put something down.

Foreplay is not a starting pistol

Once you are actually there, the other complaint arrives, and it is about presence rather than skill. One woman on my stitch put it perfectly. If we wanted to go straight to the deed, we would do it ourselves. If you are there, act like we are also present.

That is not a request for exotic technique. It is a request to be treated as a participant rather than a location. Slow down well past the point where you think you are being generous. Ask what she likes and then believe the answer, even when it is slower or lighter or duller than you expected, because a lot of women have spent years performing enthusiasm for things that do nothing for them rather than correct a man mid act.

And know that her body is not always available on demand for reasons that have nothing to do with you. One woman noted that many of us get roughly one week a month where we feel genuinely good in our own bodies, and then perimenopause arrives and rewrites even that. Stress, medication, sleep and cycles all move the dial. None of it is a verdict on you.

The women who do initiate

Here is the part that should be encouraging rather than damning, and it came almost entirely from my own comments. Plenty of women turned up to say they initiate constantly, and every single one of them described the same conditions.

One said her fiancé simply does things. He does not ask, he does not need a list, he just does them, and she does things too, and it feels balanced. Then she is the one initiating more than three quarters of the time. Another said her husband meets her halfway in everything. Another spelled out the full recipe: he knows how to get her there, there is foreplay and emotional connection before anything else, and she is not doing domestic labour for him or mothering him or distracted by everything he is not helping with.

That is not a coincidence and it is not luck. Those men are not doing anything a reader of this post could not start doing on Saturday.

I will also say, because it is true and it matters, that some women did the whole list and are still the one initiating. One said she does all of it and she is tired. Fairness is not a vending machine. Doing your share is the baseline for a functioning partnership, not a lever you pull for an outcome, and if you can only manage it while a reward is visible then you have understood none of this.

If you have had this wrong for years

Have the conversation in daylight, fully dressed, nowhere near bedtime. Bedtime is the worst possible venue because one of you is already disappointed.

Open by conceding the point. "I have been waiting for you to want me, and I think I have had it backwards. I want to take some things off you properly, not help with them."

Ask the real question. "What are you carrying that I do not see?" Then let her answer without arguing about whether it is fair. It will not feel fair. Some of it will be work you genuinely did not know existed.

Take one thing permanently. Not help with it. Own it, including the remembering, the scheduling and the noticing. If she never has to think about that thing again, you have actually removed weight rather than moved it around.

Then touch her without it being a question. A hand on her back walking past. A text in the afternoon that is not logistics. The goal is that contact stops being a bid she has to answer.

The thing that will ruin it: doing any of this for two weeks and then pointing out that you have been doing it. The moment it becomes an invoice, it is a transaction again, and you are back where you started with the added insult of having been managed. Give it a couple of months before you look for anything. If you cannot do that, this was never about the dishes for you either.

What I keep coming back to

What struck me most reading those thousands of comments was how few of them were angry. Mostly they were women explaining something they had explained before, at home, to someone who did not hear it, hoping this time it might land because a stranger asked.

The technique side of this matters too, and I wrote about that separately in how to actually get her there. But no amount of technique fixes a dynamic where she is still the manager. Fix the dynamic first. Everything else gets easier, including the part you were originally asking about.

She has not stopped wanting you. She is waiting to have enough left over to feel it.

Do the dishes. Then keep doing them.

Not as a strategy, not as a trade, and not while keeping score. It is the least romantic advice I give and it is the one that works.
