Cowgirl Position Variations: Reverse, Leaning and Beyond
Here is something I wish someone had told me years ago: cowgirl is not one position. It is a whole category, and the difference between two of its variations can be the difference between "this is fine" and "oh, THAT." Same basic setup, you on top, and yet a few inches of lean or a change in which way you are facing completely rewires what you feel.
So if classic cowgirl has gotten a little routine, this is your menu. Every variation below hits differently, and I have noted what each one actually does so you can pick based on what you are chasing rather than what looks good in a movie.
Classic cowgirl (your baseline)
You are facing your partner, straddling them, sitting upright. This is the one everybody pictures, and it is the baseline every other variation adjusts from. Sitting tall gives you the deepest penetration and the most control over speed, and it keeps you face to face, which is honestly underrated. Eye contact and kissing are right there.
What it does not give you is much clitoral contact, which is exactly why so many people say cowgirl "does not work" for them. It is not the position failing, it is that upright is the least clit-friendly version of it. Which brings us to the fix.
Leaning forward cowgirl (the one that actually gets you there)
Lean your chest down toward your partner and put your hands on their chest or the mattress. This is the single highest-value adjustment in the whole category. Leaning forward presses your clit against their pubic bone, so every movement gives you friction where you need it instead of just depth.
It also shortens the stroke and takes the strain off your quads, so you can go much longer. Grinding in this position rather than bouncing is how a lot of people have their first orgasm on top. If you take one thing from this post, make it this variation.
Leaning back cowgirl (the G-spot angle)
Now go the other way. Lean back and put your hands on their thighs or the bed behind you. This tips the angle of penetration toward the front wall of your vagina, which is where the G-spot lives, so it trades clitoral friction for deep internal pressure.
It is intense and it is a workout, so treat it as something you move into for a stretch rather than hold all night. A little G-Spot Stimulation Cream beforehand makes that zone easier to find, and a wedge pillow under their hips improves the angle even further.
Gear that changes the angle for you.
Reverse cowgirl
Same straddle, but you turn around and face their feet. Reverse cowgirl changes the angle of entry entirely, and a lot of people find it hits a completely different spot than facing forward. It also gives your partner a view they are extremely enthusiastic about, which is its own kind of fun.
A few honest notes. It is less stable, so plant your feet flat rather than kneeling and use their thighs or the bed for balance. Go easy at first, because the backward angle can bend things uncomfortably for him if you drop your weight too fast. And you lose eye contact, so if you like the connection of facing each other, use this as a change of pace instead of the main event. Leaning forward onto their shins deepens the angle beautifully once you feel steady.

Squatting cowgirl
Instead of kneeling, you crouch with both feet flat on the bed. This gives you the most range of motion of any variation and lets you control depth with real precision, rising almost all the way off and sinking back down.
It is also, frankly, the hardest on your legs. Think of it as the sprint version, something you use for a hot minute rather than a whole session. Hold their hands or the headboard for balance, and drop back to your knees the second your thighs start shaking.
Chair cowgirl
Get off the bed. Your partner sits in a sturdy chair or on the edge of the mattress, and you straddle them with your feet on the floor. Being upright and chest to chest makes this one feel unusually intimate, and having the floor under you means your feet take the work instead of your quads.
It is also the most beginner-friendly variation, because the grinding motion comes naturally and you never feel like you might topple over. Great for anyone who finds the bed versions physically awkward.
The lazy cowgirl (my personal favorite)
Lie fully flat on top of your partner, chest to chest, legs together and stretched out between or outside theirs. There is barely any movement here, more of a slow rub than a ride, and the tight-legs position creates a completely different kind of pressure.
For people who need their thighs squeezed together to get there, this is the one. It requires almost no energy, which makes it perfect for late nights, lazy mornings, or the tail end of a long session when you still want to finish but your legs have resigned.
Bringing a toy into any of them
Every variation here has both sets of hands free, which is why cowgirl in all its forms is so toy-friendly. A finger vibrator lets your own touch do the steering without holding anything bulky. A bullet is small enough to keep in play through position changes. The We-Vibe Melt 2 is built to sit between two bodies, so it shines in the leaning-forward and lazy variations. And a We-Vibe Chorus stays in place through every single variation, remote and all.
Toys that keep up with the position changes.
How to actually use this list
Do not try to run through all seven in one night. Pick two that sound appealing and give them a real shot, because the first attempt at any new position is always a little clumsy and that says nothing about whether it will eventually be your favorite. Move between variations when your legs need a break, which is a completely legitimate reason to switch.
And if you are still building confidence on top in general, start with the fundamentals in our guide to how to ride a man, which covers rhythm, pacing, and beating thigh burn. Then come back here and start working through the menu.
